This site is designed to provide all materials and information needed for you to complete your independent novels project. Since these novels are read outside of class, you will be working exclusively online and using a variety of Web 2.0 and networking tools to communicate and collaborate on your projects.

Rationale
Among the school's goals is to create life long readers. To achieve this goal, independent reading projects are assigned to foster reading and engagement as a community. Since this reading happens outside of class, we will be using technology to share our thoughts, comments, and resources. As a part of the objective to create life long readers, this site is designed to develop an open network of readers who can engage each other in various texts within and beyond the course lessons.
Process
You will be signing up to read one of the five texts listed below. The reading is first come, first serve, so make sure you sign up as soon as possible to ensure your choice of novels.

Discussion Posts
You will be engaging with your peers in discussions on your chosen text. These discussions are designed to enhance your understanding and engagement of the text as you read. Below you will find feeds for each of your groups to help you keep up with your postings. Click on the book covers to go to your group's discussion page. Make sure you also visit the Discussion Home page for further instructions and a rubric for your postings.
Activities
Along with your discussions, you will be participating in some activities using various networking and Web 2.0 tools to enhance your reading experience.

Current Events ArticlesIn this assignment, you will be asked to find a current event article that can relate to one or more of your novel's themes. You will be using Diigo and Delicious to tag and annotate your current event article. You will also use Diigo to engage your peers in discussion on their articles as well.

Twitter VocabularyYou will be using Twitter to list vocabulary from your novel. You will use a group hashtag to help keep track of your group's vocabulary throughout the reading. At the end of your reading, you will use this list in your novel review presentation.

Novel Review PresentationYou and your group members will collaborate to make a multimedia presentation on VoiceThread. This presentation should be a thorough review of the novel including themes, characters, the author's writing style, and so on. Your primary goal with this presentation is to demonstrate the continued relevance of your novel to future readers.
